| As the most "green" state in the US, Vermont has taken numerous initiatives to earn and continue its title. The biggest city in Vermont is Burlington, a city with around 42, 284 inhabitants. This vibrant city is located on Lake Champlain and is 45 miles South of the U.S. Canadian border. The town began to be populated during the 1770s when settlers began to clear land for farms and cabins. By 1785, the town was established. Flash forward to 2015 to a town that is innovative and the embodiment of sustainability. Currently, the city gathers 100% of its electricity from renewable energy sources. Burlington isn't the only city to be focusing on reducing waste and pollution. Cities like San Francisco are working on becoming as environmentally friendly as possible, even becoming the first city to ban selling plastic bottles. But a city as progressive as San Francisco hasn't even matched Burlington's accomplishments in terms of using solar, wind, biomass and a hydroelectric dam. How did Burlington succeed? 40% of the energy is secured from hydropower from the Winooski River as well as another, small dam in Maine. 20% derives from wind turbines, while 35% is produced at a biomass facility. |
